Carolina Cup This Saturday

I’ll be headed to my first Carolina Cup horse race in Camden, South Carolina on Saturday.

The 80th Running

I think Nathan knows what he is going to wear. I think Tracy has finally gotten everything together after a catastrophe was averted in the placement of the monogram on her hat. Her dress is fitted (and she looks good in it.)

I too, have figured out my choice for the day. Seersucker, white shirt, Vineyard Vines bow tie, blue pocket square, and loafers. That is of course only if some one out there wants to rush deliver me a horse racing bow tie to wear. I decided to go the route of looking through my closet. I may change my mind before Saturday anyways. But never let those types of things stop you from sending me neck wear. @aaronhommell is the twitter if you need to get in touch with me to send me stuff. I’m always open to shamelessly promoting your business on my blog.

Enough with the shameless plug urging those who sew great bows to send me some. Even if those people are great people and are the salt of the earth.

With getting ready for this weekend, there has also be considerable talk about what we are drinking for the tailgate. I have bourbon already on hand and that would make a great horse race libation, but I was worried about the availability of ice all day. I was especially questioning the likely hood that there would be ice in the sea of tailgaters who will likely never see a horse, but only the bottom of a cheap beer can and want all the ice to keep those frat-stones cold.

I asked Tracy what she thought and she (as a Cup regular) assured me that there was nothing to be worried about. Here is where things got funny. I have posted the text screenshot below.

My girl has seen me have a “couple beers” in front of her a handful of times. I can’t imagine what Nathan, and his Pike fraters are going to encourage me to drink while I’m at this horse race. On top of this, SAE (my brotherhood) will have plenty of chapters attending and having there own shindig that I may shimmy my way around. Who knows?

What I do know (other than I like to narrate my own life apparently (see text above)) is that if there is a tailgate or an event where day drinking is present, I’m not far away. Granted, I’m not always the life of the party. In undergrad, I was a senior at my last college football game before I had a beer during the game. Why? I was always the kid calling the games on the radio. Radio+Beer=no bueno.

However, when I’m not working, sign me up. If tailgating was a basketball game, I’d be the kid who fouls a lot and scores early but not often. Everyone remembers that I was there. (oddly enough this is my real life basketball presence as well)

I guess I will just have to wait and see how it goes. Hopefully you will follow my journey by following me on twitter @aaronhommell.

A Man’s Pocket

Thursday was our last day of classes. People are stressing like crazy for finals… but they wanted a last hurrah at the bar on Thursday night. They wanted me to go. Who am I to disappoint?

I studied all afternoon and then headed over around 9:30. I looked fresh in an green gingham oxford, black sweater vest, and corduroy jacket paired with jeans and loafers.

The night went smoothly. I even met a chick from the midwest… even though she was from Illinois. (spit)

The bar closed up and we kept it classy and headed for Waffle House. I’m not saying I kissed the chick from Illinois… but she was with us and I vaguely remember kissing someone outside as we walked in. I found out over breakfast that this girl was crazy… like off the wall, bat shit crazy.

I was home and asleep before I knew it.

The next morning, I woke up and saw my jacket crumpled over my chair. It seemed heavier than normal so I figured I left my keys in the pocket or something. I was mistaken. Here are the things I found in my jacket. By the way, I don’t smoke.

What the hell is wrong with me?

Clothing Choices

I have become accustomed to the wardrobe of the south apparently. At least this is what I have been told.

I realized this last night as I strolled into my college hangout with a nice red and white checked oxford shirt, navy blue vest, nice jeans, and (only because it was pouring down rain) new balance 993′s. I dressed like this often in undergrad… but never realized that this was going to lead to some strife.

“So XXXX is apparently better than us now that he is in Law School…” said one of my friends.

Uhhh… no just thought I would dress nicely for the bar.

I did grab the attention of a few at the bar though. I was with one of the “old-balls” later in the evening. He is 31, former army, state trooper. We were sitting at the bar, and a girl I know from my school (who is an NFL Cheerleader) was sitting sort of caddy corner from us. I was drinking my drink and ignoring that section of the bar anyways, but my buddy could not stop saying things like, “Duder… she is staring at one of us and it isn’t me.” “Man, she wants you to go talk to her.” “I think she would totally be down, dude.”

Nope, I’m not hearing any of this. She isn’t down for anything. I wouldn’t stand a chance. I don’t want a chance. She isn’t my type. AND HOLY CRAP WHAT IS SHE DRINKING? WATER AND WELL VODKA? AND YOU WANT ME TO HIT ON THIS GIRL? ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND? Any girl who drinks water and vodka should be crossed off of any list that I may be keeping in my head of possible girls I would talk to. Period. End of discussion.

My buddy got totally cornered by the hottest 47-year old mother of 2 that I have ever seen in my entire life. If it wasn’t for the fact that he was seeing someone, this would have been very interesting. She had walked in with this creepy looking dude that she left at the bar and walked over to my friend within ear-shot of her date and said, “Are you going to let me rock your world or not?”

No one’s world was rocked. Sorry readers. This isn’t getting any better.

However, after he said he would rather not (in so many words,) She looked at me and said, “Nice sweater vest, kid.”

I was avenged in my choice of clothing for the night.

And that made all the difference.

This Week Is Flying!

Wow, I cannot believe how much has happened and the lack of time I have had to post for all of you followers.

I have gotten emails, texts, and even a few nudges that if I didn’t post something soon, people were going to go postal.

So here is what has happened:

I got into my destination train station at 6:10AM Saturday morning. (I am going to do a post after I get back to the south on my whole “train experience… so stay tuned for that.) After naps and recharging at home, I got caught up with my family and had thanksgiving dinner. It was wonderful to say the least.

Sunday, I went to my brother’s house and watched the Packers win again. My two nephews and niece were such a bundle of fun. It is hard to believe how much bigger they have gotten and how grown up they are in just 3 months of being away. I am giving up a lot of that experience by going to school so far away. While this saddens me some, it really makes me enjoy the time and chances I have to spend time around them now.

Sunday night started the debauchery.

I went to a local Irish bar that my friends like on the south side. I met up with Ryan, a realtor and all around good guy for a beer. He invited David and Stacy who were also good friends. Ryan and Stacy read this blawg… so this is their damn shout out. We played pool, drank and even sang some karaoke. It was a great evening with a fun ending at Steak N’ Shake.

Monday was the day I visited my undergrad. I blasted through the door of one of my favorite professor’s media law class with candy for the students. I listened from the back row for the rest of the class and even got called on a few times. The professor has a J.D. from a Big Ten school and is awesome, so it made for a fine morning. I visited a few others on campus and even took a stroll through the Fraternity house.

Monday night was quiet night. I studied and tried to relax as much as possible. I did laundry and for a moment, was just glad to be able to say that I was home… even if that meant that I was studying crim law. I am surprised by the amount of work I have managed to get done in the time that I have been home.

I got up Tuesday and headed downtown to have lunch with one of my best friends from the fraternity. He works in a lab downtown and for him it was just a short walk. We had a good lunch and then I hit up the library to study for the afternoon. I got about 4 hours of studying in before coming home to have dinner. After dinner, I got another hour or so in before I was summoned to go out with some fraternity brothers in my undergrad town. We hit up three bars and headed home late. I slept at one of their houses and got up early enough today to get in 8-9 more hours of studying.

Being that it is the day before Thanksgiving, today is a huge party day. We are supposed to go downtown tonight, but I haven’t heard the full plans yet. I may just end up staying in and studying… who knows?

I am sorry I have neglected the blawg. I will try to stop doing that.

Sickest Three Piece In The Country

I drove Corey Smith around my college town when he played at our school. I still love the guy even if his new stuff that is on CMT is really tuned funny.

This is the song I play constantly before we go out at nights. Granted, I play the album version….

Corey may be from the University of Georgia, but his bass player is from the midwest – Indiana University!

Halloween Pictures Starting To Surface

I went as one of my professors. You really cannot doubt a guy who walks in the bar with arms in the air letting people know he has arrived. Apparently (although I have no recolection of this. I got 5th in the costume contest.) I looked pretty decent.

Car Bomb Tuesday’s Gets Real

I never post photos of myself due to my love of anonymity. I have accidentally revealed too much about myself a few times, but here I do this on purpose. You don’t know which one I am… but if you read this blawg with any regularity… you can figure out which one is me. Just wanted to show those playing at home what a Car Bomb Tuesday looks like down here.

A few of the regulars for "Car Bomb Tuesday's."

Car Bomb Tuesdays

In the south there is very little that people do worse than drink.

In the north, especially near the great drinking state of Wisconsin, there are considerable more drinkers who are more seasoned in their consumption.

One of the things I have found is that few of the people I have met have had an “Irish Car Bomb.” I found this while discussing the drinking habits of different groups of people, regionally speaking. NJ is one of my friends who is of the drinking persuasion and he came up with the idea that every Tuesday we shall gather at the Irish Pub and indoctrinate all that we can into the ways of the Irish Car Bomb.

What is an Irish Car Bomb? Well the recipie is not hard to follow at all, an many of my readers will know what these are. I will give you the recipie anyway.

“3/4 pint Guinness
1/2 shot Bailey’s Irish Cream
1/2 shot Jameson’s Irish Whiskey
Add the Bailey’s and Jameson to a shot glass, layering the Bailey’s on the bottom. Pour the Guinness into a pint glass or beer mug 3/4 of the way full and let settle. Drop the shot glass into the Guinness and chug. If you don’t drink it fast enough it will curdle and increasingly taste worse.” – http://www.drinksmixer.com/drink7774.html
While this drink is awfully tasty… it is awfully intoxicating as well.
Last night, we went out only after I had finished all of my homework. I had a great time. However, it wasn’t the hangover I had this morning that didn’t allow me to go to class. It was a cold.
I finally got the sickness that has been going around. I have chugged orange juice and had a steady dosage of Nyquil all day to help me get better. Unless things turn for the worse while I sleep, I’ll be in class tomorrow.

Saturday Evening Shenanigans

Shenanigans.

Worked and ran errands all day Saturday.

Saturday night is a different story. I went out with some of or class who are really great people. One of the guys has me almost convinced that I have to buy a pair of cowboy boots. At home, these are merely “shit-kickers” that are only worn by certain groups. Group A has nice boots that are well maintained and wear them because they have style. Group B owns a farm and have been wearing them their whole lives. Group C are rednecks. I have friends at home in the A and B groups.

Down here, many wear boots every time they have jeans on. There are a few who wear them to class everyday. I have no problems with these people and envy them when they talk about how comfortable they are.

Well, I am headed to the local boot shop. I’m not saying I am buying anything. I’m just there to try on some boots and to see what all the fuss is about.

But back to my night.

We left the apartment where everyone met and walked 2 blocks to a bar that was on its way to becoming packed. A local wedding had ended and their were tons of people from the wedding in the building. There was a decent 2-man band; as decent as any 2-man band can be anyways.

We decided to leave around 12:45 and head to another bar.

I also may or may not have called a friend at this point to come meet me at her elevator. This person may or may not have been sleeping and was in pajamas at the time. You decide what to believe.

We headed after this to a bar caddy corner from the law school. Had a great time that I don’t really remember too much about. Walked home and hit the sack at 4:30AM Sunday.

If that isn’t an awesome night, well I don’t know what is.

Midterms and Margaritas ~Is There A Better Combo? Res Ipsa Loquitur

Exactly. The thing speaks for itself.

I studied most of the day Friday for my Saturday morning midterm. D, E, and I holed up in an old classroom and used the whiteboards to go over hypos and give each other questions. We grilled each other for 4-5 hours and then went separate ways for a few hours before coming back together for another three-hour session in the evening where JA jumped in with us. JA’s wife had had some complications to her pregnancy from a couple of weeks back and she was in the hospital for the day so that is why he missed our afternoon session. After we felt pretty snug with the intentional torts and defenses, we got ear plugs and parted for the night.

JA and I decided to get a pre-midterm beer at the corner bar that is half a block from school. They always have some kickin blues music and for the most part, they usually have a decent clientele. We walked in and realized we were in a pretty much deserted bar. Over the next 45 minutes, the place got pumpin and we found out that instead of a blues band, the bar was featuring the sounds of a local rap group. The group had some kind of “Gym Class Heroes” vibe to it.

JA and I began to look around and we realized that we were the only white people in the bar besides the bartender named, Margaret. This didn’t bother me too much, but we had more fun as the night went on. The singer kept asking the crowd where the “Black daddies at?” Every time, JA and I yell “right here!” People thought it was funny. The couples on either side of us at the bar had us in stitches and they were in turn as well.

I got home around midnight and went to sleep with dreams of dancing torts in my head.

Saturday morning, I woke up around 7:15 to the sound of my phone text message ringtone. The roomy needed some last second outlines printed and he was at school. The library didn’t open until 9 and our test was at 9, so I printed them and brought them to him when I got to school at 8:10. I have been thinking about this. What good are outlines if you don’t know where things are in them? I guess he could have been studying with them on his computer, but there is no way that he knew physically where things were. Not my problem, I am sure he did fine on the test anyways. Our section was allowed the use of no notes whatsoever. No worries here, I had the stuff down pat.

The test itself had an interesting hypo and I won’t bore you with the details, but I only for sure missed one thing. I completely blanked on one tort that was very obvious in the last question. I argued some other valid tort claims, but missed the most obvious tort of trespass to land. Welcome to law school where you can boil down a paragraph to 4 different torts, but you miss the most obvious one. The other test takers I talked to after the test said they almost missed it as well, but 3/4 of them remembered the tort and wrote about it. I wrote around 2200 words in my 70 minute test, I think. I remember being at the 1800 word mark with a third of an answer to go so, I am estimating. I have heard others say they were at as many as 4500 words and as few as 1500. A 3000 word swing is quite a jump. I’m wondering how many words the test takers who wrote their exam, instead of typing it, got?

After the test, I needed to de-stress so I went to the farmer’s market to get produce, and then went to the regular grocery for the rest of my weekly trip. Afterwards, I got a call from K that people were going out for foods and drinks at the local mexican joint. I tagged along and had a margarita or three. We talked about school and our differing tests as there were people from each of the sections there.

I came home after the mexican food and took a nap and began to study for my Civ Pro midterm on Friday. The test was moved up a day from Saturday because of a conflicting schedule with the staff of the professor. Oddly enough, our section was the only section moved. This is a wildly confusing class, so I am going to have to really put in the time in the library this week.

Back to the grind.
