Sink Hole

I can’t believe I forgot to tell you all about the sink hole of 2012.

My street was the victim of this horrible situation known as No-one-pays-taxes-and-we-dont-have-the-money-to-fix-the-aging-infastructure-of-your-neighborhood-itis.

It is a vastly debilitating disease in Mississippi.

A pipe burst underground some time ago on my street. Over time, the water eroded the soil underneath the street. When a car ran over this portion of the road, the road caved in. This has happened on 3 streets in my neighborhood since I moved here. Somehow, we got the luck of the draw and the city of Jackson came and paved our whole street!

The street was blocked off for a day.

The hole in question.

I am so glad that this is now fixed. I can’t wait for the rest of the aging sewer and water system to fail as well.

Final Four

I have 3/4 final four teams in my best bracket. That bracket is currently number 1 in its pool and with a win from Ohio State and two by Kentucky, I will be squared away with my third win in one of the pools in which I have been in as many years.

Should I chalk this up to my Indiana roots? Probably not. I should probably throw it down as sheer dumb luck. I mean, I posted a bracket on the NCAA D-III men’s and women’s tournaments and didn’t do too poorly. D3hoops.com always has a great amount of rotation time during the winter on my desktop, but I doubt the occasional glance helped me pick Cabrini over Illinois Wesleyan in one men’s semifinal.

I read a great post by a fellow Hoosier over at Great Lakes Prep. It was almost like he understood how I felt watching these games. I am so far removed from the in depth conversations and the high school games that I miss so much. I don’t get to just head over to blankedy blank high school for a game down here in the south. Why? I don’t know, but after watching the state championship games on TV, the basketball isn’t amazing here. Maybe I would be disappointed. Maybe I fear that there is no New Castle fieldhouse; no Anderson Wigwam; no Seymour gym; (whatever it is called) no behemoth like the Southport High School Gym; no small “family room” gym like my alma mater.

Maybe it is just that I should expand my horizons once more.

Or, maybe I should take the note that 3/4 of the final four is from the midwest.

No, Kansas is not the midwest no matter what your national news may say. Neither is South Dakota or Montana. If I hear one more regional or national media outlet say these types of things, I might go postal. “The U.S. Census Bureau divides the Midwest into two distinct regions, the East North Central “Great Lakes States,” which include Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin (Midwestern states that come in contact with a Great Lake), and the West North Central “Great Plains States,” which include Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas (states that are located within the Great Plains region of the country).” (thanks Wikipedia for proving the difference between the plains states and the “midwest.”)

I Have never heard anyone claim that the Dakotas were part of the midwest. And I should never have to. But, I digress.

Either way I dice it, I need to become more in tune with the sports around me in this locale. I guess this means watching football, (which I already do) and trying to watch more baseball as the spring begins.

Here goes nothing.

May Be Moving Next Year

The possible new digs.

I am moving into a place next year with two other law students who are in a different section. This lovely house is about 10 blocks from where I live now. No promises yet… but this seems like a real possibility.

Raised Right

My mother brought me up pretty well if I do say so myself.
I just saved some polo shorts by sewing up the hole in the back pocket. Great success.

Huge Photo Post

I love photos but have neglected in posting any. I am going to dump the ones I need to below. Enjoy.

This is not my photo, but I had this sent to me over break. I want one of these for my door really badly.

Who does christmas morning right? This kid.

Rager isn't a word? As in, "I threw a party last night. A flippin' rager."

Apparently neither is eskimo.

Some of my fraternity brothers and I went out to watch the Indiana game. This was our table. We aren't raging alcoholics. I swear!

Downtown Indianapolis. The circle of lights always has me in a good mood.

This was sent to me over break as well. I would say that Hemingway and I might be kindred spirits.

My nephew, Ben thought he was a "baller" in my sunglasses. The kid looks like a young midwestern fratstar to me.

Also while at home, R and I thought that having "old fashioned" night at the bar was a good idea. I am not saying that I am against it now, But it was maybe only half of a good idea.

My Grandmother was not letting me head back to Mississippi without cookies. The woman is a saint.

After locking myself out of my car, K had to come get me. Her room mate's dog is named Shakespeare. He was my best friend for a bit.

So Nathan and I are driving down the street and suddenly, yard birds. What the hell? I thought I was in the capital city of a state! Nah, Just Jackson.

First trip to the grocery when I came back. I don't know why I took this... but I love the texture.

First reading assignment back. Came across this gem. Possibly the best sentence structure I have read in Law School. This is the kind of thing I came here to read.

When in Jackson, make sure you don't pass up the bread pudding at Two Sister's. It is to die for.

The chinese grocery in town had these beauties on sale. I got none of them, but I did get some friends to agree to stew some up once the weather gets warmer.

One of the things I have done since coming back to school is made sure I was dressed well for class everyday. Collared shirt minimum, I haven't been below a sport shirt yet. This was a shirt/sport coat combo from last week. All I'm saying is that the kid has style. You seriously cannot deny it.

Christmas As A Catholic…

Well, I’m home and still having a pretty good time.

Christmas eve was a great night. My grandmother and I headed down to my aunt’s house. She lives in a cabin dubbed “Lonesome Pine.” Beautiful does not begin to explain what her house looked like for the holidays. She made dinner and provided some libations for a wonderful evening.

After dinner, we headed back north to make it back in time for midnight Mass at the church where I had grown up. I went to Catholic school for 12 years and this was something that used to be such a huge part of me.

My Grandmother and I before Christmas midnight Mass at my Aunt's house.

Mass went well, but on the way there, my grandmother and I had a hilarious conversation… well hilarious to me anyways.

“You look so nice. You know, we don’t have to rush out right after Mass if there is anyone you want to talk to afterward,” she said.

This is funny on many levels. 1.) my grandmother hates to stay after Mass. She usually wants to get home. 2.) this is my grandmother’s way of saying, “You are single and if there is some cute girl is at Mass and you want to talk to her… you should… that way you can date a good Catholic girl and not some heathen.” 3.) Or she is saying, “I’m not gonna live forever… get a move on.”

Well, Mass went fine, and while I did see many people I remembered from home, it was nice to duck out right after. This way, the people who really want to talk to me know how to get a hold of me… and those who don’t won’t.

Christmas day came and went without a hitch as well… AND THE PACKERS CREAMED THE BEARS! – Which is always good news.

My foot pain is back. Looks like I’m going to be headed back to the doctor while I am home.

WOW … So Much Has Happened

I apologize first and foremost for my tardiness in this post. I have made a mistake.

I realized last night that I hadn’t posted in forever and that much more importnatly, I had not decompressed from finals since I got home. So much happened. So much didn’t happen. I must relate these adventures.

Where to start?

How about my Emergency Room trip?!?!

Yeah. I hurt my foot sometime over the weened between finals. I was forced to visit my first southern hospital to get some meds and CRUTCHES. While in the waiting room, a girl from school and one of my buddies, J, came over and ran torts hypos while I waited for four hours to see a doctor (Who by all accounts was a major idiot.)

I got my meds and crutches, and then we headed to the IHOP to study some more. I was looped on Lortab by this point, so I am sure the study session was useless. Torts is my easiest class and favorite as well. I showed up to the test an hour after taking my second dose of Lortab and was nauseous for the entire test. It was tough… and made tougher after I fell asleep for 7 minutes of the 3 hour test. In the hallway afterwards, I stacked my answer against the answers of the others in my group. I had the consensus best test … or at least one of the best… So I didn’t feel too bad.

Contracts came and went last Thursday and I probably did not do well on that final. I got similar answers to my friends… but it is my least favorite and hardest class… so I wasn’t expecting to amjure it. It is in the professor’s hands now.

There was a big law school end of the year blowout on Thursday. The LSBA sponsored the event at a local bar, but my medication did not allow me to drink. I went anyway… hoping to talk to some girls in a non class situation…(plus lets be honest… Jenny was going.) I talked to a few people but did not act like my normal outgoing self because I didn’t feel well. I realized later in the evening that my friend, K really knows me pretty well. She had some observations of her own about me that were really enlightening. In her words, “Usually one person has to make a move… or nothing will ever happen.” Great point. Good talk.

Friday, N, R, and I went and saw Sherlock Holmes. It was good, but slightly predictable at times. 8/10. I’d see it again. Saturday I woke up and ran a few errands. Took a nap… Then packed. I was on the road around 7pm and ended up at home a minute before 6 on Sunday morning.

It is nice to be home… but the happenings here since I got here remind me so much of how I felt while I was leaving at Thanksgiving time. Deciding where to take the bar is going to be so interesting.

Oh well, dinner with my brother tonight. Look for some intermittent posts for the next few days. I’m sure I’ll get a bunch of writing in.

Taking The Train Back South

The trip to the south could not have been more craptastic.

My brother drove me to the station and I got there a bit early. 8:30 pm for a 10:30 pm train trip back to the South. I thought this would work out well, as I could get my study materials all set up for the big trip.

10:30 came and went.

So did 11:30.

And 12:30.

The train finally got to the station at 1:07 am Saturday morning.

In the waiting period, I met a lovely family from Davenport, Iowa. I taught them card games that they didn’t really know how to play. Blackjack was even an issue for these people. However, they were fun and funny.

I watched another dude who looked a little messed up, puke into a plastic plant. You stay classy Amtrak. (Notice I didn’t intro that. I was looking for shock and awe.)

Let me give you a feel of my trip from 7AM on…

My tweets:

“I just had the worst sausage egg and cheese on English muffin ever … Still on train. Still pissed. Still ready to bitch out Amtrak”

“Amtrak, you are going to get a piece of my mind after I get home and get some sleep. Sincerely, a pissed off Yankee living in Dixie.”

“Super liberal couples behind me really need to stop saying dumb shit. I can’t take it much longer”

“The old dude is wearing a bandana… He looks odd”

“I smell weed. Should I be thinking hippies behind me? Or 18 year old black dude in front of me-these are my two options. #stereotypehell”

“Nope… I now know it has got to be from dude three seats away clutching his bag with the most bloodshot stoner eyes I have seen”

“If a 45 year old woman is wearing a day glow fanny pack that isn’t sorority tailgate related… Can I judge her?”

“Now the fanny pack lady is talking about sneaking alcohol into SEC football games. I seriously couldn’t make this shit up.”

I’m home. That is all that really matters right now.

Leaving Home

I get back on the train late tonight to return to the deep south.

I won’t lie. I’m pretty excited to get back down there. I love it here at home… I really do, but I’ll be glad to be back in the south.

Up here, a guy just wants to fall back into the same old ruts he was in. You know what I mean? I love my friends here… so this isn’t in relation to them, but I know that I could never study if I had gone to law school up here. It just wouldn’t happen.

I have a lot to write, and wish the train had Wi-Fi… but alas, it doesn’t. I may write/study on the train… but want you all to know that the trip woun’t allow me to post… so the posts will have to be uploaded all at once when I get home. Sorry… if you all get the e-mail updates around 1PM tomorrow.
